Ava DuVernay and Autumn Riley

Ava DuVernay, born August 24, 1972 in Long Beach California. DuVernay was able to explore her artistic and creative side when she was a young girl because of her Aunt Denise. DuVernay worked as night nurses to afford her aunt the space she required during her day time to enjoy the pleasures of literature, art, and theatre. The aunt introduced DuVernay the 1961 film West Side Story and DuVernay was captivated by it. DuVernay discovered through her example the power of art as a vehicle for activism. In the same way, her mother was conscious of her social status and influenced the importance of speaking up through the art of. DuVernay was born in Compton by her parents however, she spent her summers in Lowndes County Alabama. This is where the family of DuVernay's father has lived for many generations. DuVernay's father recalled watching the historical Civil Rights march through the Edmund Pettus Bridge in the neighboring town Selma Alabama. Her summers in Selma, Alabama would influence her later on to create a film about Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. DuVernay obtained her Saint Joseph High School diploma in Lakewood California. After graduation, she studied in the University of California Los Angeles and graduated with degrees in English as well as African American study. DuVernay started producing for broadcast journalism while she was in her college. DuVernay was a CBS News intern during the O.J. Simpson's trial. DuVernay remembers being given the responsibility of looking over the home and looking through the waste from one of juries. DuVernay was dissatisfied with her journalistic duties and decided to change to the public relations industry. DuVernay was offered a job straight from college, working as a publicist in the young age of a studio. The company she founded for her own PR, The DuVernay Agency was established in 1999. Besides PR, the agency created several lifestyle networks like Urban Beauty Collective, Urban Thought Collective Urban Eye, HelloBeautiful.
